About the person behind Lagrange

I’m Daryl Hatfield

I’ve built marketing teams and run campaigns with multi-million-dollar budgets. I’ve also been the person getting a small business’s website working and figuring out where its next customers will come from.

Today, I bring that experience to the marketing and tools we build at Lagrange Studios.

How I got here

Different teams. Different constraints.

Experience at both ends of the budget.

I’ve worked with early-stage startups, venture-backed companies, nonprofits and established organizations. The resources change. So does the work that needs doing first.

Established organizations

Building a marketing function.

In finance and health tech, I built digital marketing capabilities, led teams and worked across departments to get changes into production. At two mortgage companies, the programs I helped grow started at $8,000 and $10,000 a month and reached multi-million-dollar annual media spend.

That work taught me how to connect campaign decisions to the business, and how to get work done when several teams have a part in it.

Startups and smaller teams

Filling the gaps yourself.

A smaller business may need a website, working analytics and its first paid campaign before it needs a larger marketing team. Sometimes the missing piece is a tool that doesn’t exist yet.

I’m comfortable working across those gaps. I’ve built SEO ventures and customer-facing applications of my own, including the databases, payments and email behind them.

The background

From early social media to building systems.

I’ve been working in digital marketing since around 2007. Each role added a different part of the work I do today.

  1. 2007–2010

Helping build social media at the NBA.

    NBA Entertainment

Social media was still new territory for brands. I was instrumental in helping build the social strategy, alongside editing digital content and working on the NBA and WNBA’s emerging social channels. We were figuring out what the platforms could do and how to use them.

  2. 2012–2017

    Learning across businesses.

SEO ventures · Agency work · Entertainment

I built SEO ventures and worked with small businesses through consulting and agency roles. My work at Garden State Home Loans, Miles Technologies and Disc Makers spanned search, paid media and website conversion. It meant learning different businesses and being close to the implementation.

  3. 2017–2024

    Building teams and digital capabilities.

Freedom Mortgage · NewRez · Prescryptive Health

I led digital marketing in mortgage lending and health tech, with responsibility for paid media, measurement and the teams running it. At Prescryptive Health, I led a website redesign and helped establish digital marketing capabilities. Working in regulated industries also meant learning how to build approvals into the process.

  4. 2025–today

Bringing the work together at Lagrange.

Independent consulting · Partner work · Owned products

I work with businesses on measurement, paid acquisition and AI workflows, and build tools that connect the parts. Some engagements start with a specific tracking issue. Others need a broader marketing process or help getting a product built.

Beyond the campaign

Getting the people and systems working together.

My work has involved steering creative, coordinating launches and making sure the information behind a campaign stays accurate.

Creative direction and website launches.

I’ve helped steer campaign messaging and creative, managed stakeholders through website launches, and worked with product and technical teams to get the work live.

Keeping the website aligned with sales.

On the B2B side, I built a process to keep product and offering pages up to date so the website reflected what the sales team was telling prospective customers.

Media partners and acquisition economics.

I’ve managed paid search and social, vendor-managed programmatic campaigns and purchased-lead programs. In mortgage lending, I negotiated vendor pricing and followed leads through credit pulls, rate locks and funded loans to understand which sources justified the spend.

Live data behind the advertising.

I worked with technical teams on the feeds behind live rate tables, both on websites and in advertising placements. Rates could change by the minute, so keeping that information current was part of running the marketing.

What I’m working on now

Campaigns, customer data and working software.

The recent work ranges from improving enrollment measurement to building products people can use.

Client work

Understanding who a campaign brings in.

For a benefits nonprofit, I’ve been improving campaigns while working on the distinction between a reported enrollment and a new member. Homepage personalization and Google Client ID capture are in place. Connecting that activity to enrollment status is underway.

Startup and partner work

Connecting acquisition to what happens next.

My work with early-stage businesses includes paid acquisition, connecting campaign activity to conversations, and reporting workflows that help a team decide what to change. I also work with partners on conversational AI and the systems around it.

AI workflows

Making a repeatable task easier to run.

I build custom GPTs, Claude skills and automations for reporting, creative review and paid media. That includes connections to analytics and advertising tools, with instructions for what to check and where a person needs to review the result.

Owned products

Building the business around the tool.

With NJ Landlord Forms, I built an AI-assisted document service with a database, Stripe payments and email through Resend. What Should I Read Next uses a reader’s inputs to generate book recommendations. LOOT is an early financial-tools product where I’m working on API connections.

Working together

Start with what needs attention.

You might come to me because a report doesn’t add up, a campaign has stalled or a tool needs building. I want to understand that problem before deciding what the project should be.

If the work uncovers something else, we talk about it and agree on what to do next. A small team can’t fix everything at once. Part of my job is helping you decide what matters now and what can wait.

I stay involved in the implementation. When your team will run what we’ve built, the handoff includes the instructions and training they need to use it.
